BUILT BY A SENIOR PRODUCT DESIGNER, NOT A PROMPT

I built Actually because I kept doing the same review by hand.

For 20 years I've worked across brand, digital and product design, inside teams at Boots, BMW, Avon, RS Group and the Department for Education, and most recently at the DWP on the service people use to claim disability benefits. I've sat in the room when a product goes wrong. It's rarely the idea. It's that nobody walked through it as the person using it for the first time.

That's the review I do for founders. Then AI builders arrived and I started seeing the same product, in the same state, 3 times a week. Live, launched, and people not getting it. So I wrote down every question I ask in that first hour and built an engine that asks them of any page you give it. That's Actually. It reads your site the way I would and hands you the marked up page.

I grew up in South Africa and decided at 13, watching animators at Disneyland, that I'd make things for a living. My parents had me down for accounting. I signed up for graphic design without telling them. 20 years later I've been a packaging designer, an art director, a web designer, and a product designer inside 4 big consultancies. In 2026 I resigned from a job I'd been unhappy in for 4 years and started The Quiet Rebuild. Actually is the first thing I've built that's mine.

What I look for

A product rarely fails on the idea. It fails because nobody thought about the person using it.

01 ·

No clear next step

If people have to work out what to do, you've already lost them.

  • No onboarding or guidance on where to start
  • Key actions buried or not obvious
  • People land and can't tell what the page is for

02 ·

Too many steps

A long journey loses people fast, however good the product is.

  • 6 fields where 3 would do
  • Confirmations that ask again
  • Progress you can't see

03 ·

Hard to use

If people can't work it out, they leave and they don't try twice.

  • Labels that describe features, not outcomes
  • Buttons that look like text, text that looks like buttons
  • Errors with no way back
02

How I see it

01 ·

First time, every time.

I look at your product as the person who has never seen it, because that's who decides whether it lives.

02 ·

Good products get people somewhere.

If someone has to work out what to do next, the page has already lost them.

03 ·

Specific beats polished.

"Improve clarity" helps nobody. "Change the headline to name what you deliver" is something you can do this afternoon.

04 ·

Honest beats kind.

I'll tell you what's costing you, in plain words, with the fix next to it.

From 100 to 800 in one go

CASE STUDY · MEDICAL SAAS

A medical SaaS founder came to me with a product that was live and going nowhere. Every new customer was onboarded personally, by the founder, over calls and end to end training. We mapped where people got lost and rebuilt the journey so it made sense on its own. They went from 100 subscribers to onboarding 800 new users, all self serve, and have since raised further funding.

What I do

Most products struggle because the experience doesn't guide people the way it needs to. I find where that's happening and tell you what to do about it, in plain words, with the fix next to each problem.

That can be a written review of your whole product, a walk through your users' journey to see where they get lost, an accessibility check, or a plan of what to fix first and what to leave. We agree the shape on a call.

Two ways to get me

Start with the £19 audit. Bring what it finds to Half-Built. When you want me in the room, book a call and we scope the work together.

Half-Built.

8 people, 3 evenings, everyone brings the thing they actually built. Dates and price announced in October.

30 minutes, your product on screen, no slides. If you want me on the work after that, this is where it starts.

What people say

"We knew something wasn't right with our product but couldn't pinpoint what. Within two weeks we had a clear picture of where users were dropping off and a plan to fix it."
ALEX M · PRODUCT LEAD
"We were spending more time explaining the product to users than improving it. The audit gave us a much clearer flow and our support requests dropped almost immediately."
SAM R · CO-FOUNDER
"No fluff, no unnecessary redesign. Just a clear, honest look at what was and wasn't working. It gave us the confidence to prioritise the right changes and move forward without second-guessing."
JORDAN T · HEAD OF PRODUCT
